Camino Walking Holidays

Camino Pilgrimage Holidays

Planning your dream Italian Camino tour? Let us explain their magnetism.

First it was the Camino de Santiago: This epic European crossing made us understand what Camino holidays really mean. The stages, the Credencial (also called the Pilgrim's Passport), the final certification, books and movies ignited our imagination. How incredible to just focus on walking, stepping outside and immersing ourselves in the journey. It's a rite of passage.

Since then, we've discovered that Italy has its own great Camino – Via Francigena, which connects the Saint Bernard Pass to Rome.

And then, there were more:

And then we learned that, in Europe, the possibilities were endless. One could explore and walk across Sweden, UK, Norway, Greece, Spain, France and beyond…

Via Francigena

The Way to Rome
camino pilgrimage at Mnteriggioni on the Via Francigena in Tuscany

From Canterbury to Rome, then further south. In Brindisi, pilgrims embarked towards the Holy Land. The Via Francigena was a path for travelers, saints, and knights, all heading towards the Eternal City and beyond the sea. In Italy, the northern section of this route begins at the Great St. Bernard Pass and continues for 1000 kilometers to Rome.

We've divided it into an unforgettable Italy pilgrimage walk lasting 7 to 10 days, but you can choose to walk it all in one for an extraordinary adventure.

Camino de Santiago

The most iconic camino to Sangtiago
camino pilgrimage on open fields along the camino de santiago

This is a journey that needs no introduction. It's perhaps the most talked-about pilgrimage and the one that comes to mind when you simply say The Way. A journey, a story, and a transformative experience – the Camino de Santiago is all this and more.

The most well-known route is the French Way, starting from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and leading to Santiago. The final stretch of 100 kilometers, beginning in Sarria, grants you the coveted Compostela, your stamp of completion. But there are several variations to try.

This Camino trail in Europe is just as epic from the Northern Way to the Primitive Way, and then from the Podense Way to the Portuguese Way.

Cammino di Oropa

Untamed nature one hour from Milan
camino pilgrimage at the cammino di oropa in piedmont

If you're looking for an easily accessible and enjoyable Italy pilgrimage, the Oropa Way is an inviting choice. Located in the Biellese region, just an hour by train from Milan, this route starts in Santhià and crosses the picturesque landscapes of the Biellese Alps.

You'll pass through forests, castles, and monasteries, and eventually reach Oropa, home to one of the world's largest Marian Sanctuaries. Its dome can be seen from much of the Piedmont region. This journey is perfect even for beginner hikers, offering many opportunities to extend your vacation by exploring this lesser-known yet incredibly rich area.

St.Francis Way

Walking in the green heart of Italy
the st. francis church at assisi at the and of a camino pilgrimage

This Camino pilgrimage walk follows in the footsteps of St. Francis, the Patron Saint of Italy.

It guides you to relics of his life in Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. It begins in Florence and ends in Rome, passing through charming villages: Assisi with its beautiful Basilica, Spello with its flower-filled alleys, the hermitages where St. Francis would pray, and Spoleto with its fortress.

The landscape is serene and truly enchanting. This is the green heart of Italy, waiting to be explored through forests and valleys, among hills and forests all the way to San Pietro. It's a unique journey that feels personal and spiritual, offering you space, time, and peace along the way.

Way to Matera

From Bari to Matera, through the essence of Puglia
a view a the sassi of matera during a camino pilgrimage

The journey begins from the seaside city of Bari, and you'll immediately dip into the lesser-known side of Puglia. Along the way, you'll encounter friendly people and terracotta-tone buildings in Altamura. It's a peaceful town that comes to life in the afternoons with the cheerful voices of children playing in the squares.

Next is Gravina, with its underground city and a suspended aqueduct over the Gravina canyon. It's an enchanting landscape adorned with olive groves, almond trees, and wildflowers. Finally, you'll reach Matera, the City of Stones, eternalized as the setting of the holy nativity.

Magna Via Francigena

A journey through beauty and humanity
landscape view of ancient town of magna via francigena in sicily during a camino pilgrimage

Our most human journey takes you through the beautiful and surprising Sicily, characterized by vast open landscapes and villages perched on hillsides.

It's an island of neighborhoods that feel like mazes, waterfalls, and natural reserves where birds of prey thrive. This is the side of Sicily known to those passing through Corleone, partly thanks to this Camino pilgrimage walk. The journey starts in vibrant Palermo and leads to Agrigento, where we recommend devoting an entire day to exploring the Valley of the Temples.

This is Sicily, an island made by its people. Experience a journey through hospitable communities for whom the Magna Via Francigena is a longstanding catalyst for change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Walk

Do I need to be fit or experienced to walk a trail?

It depends on the route and the section you choose. SloWays offers options for all fitness levels.

  • Easy / Moderate - Via Francigena (flat stages), Cammino di Oropa: ideal for beginners, families, and walkers over 60

  • Moderate - Via di Francesco: suitable for regular walkers without mountain experience

  • Moderate / Challenging - Via degli Dei: best for hikers with some training

  • Challenging - Via Romea Germanica: recommended for fit walkers with experience on varied terrain

All routes are waymarked and do not require technical equipment. If you are unsure which itinerary best matches your level, contact us and we will help you find the right option.

Yes, and many of our guests do. SloWays has no minimum number of participants: a solo booking receives the same care and preparation as a group trip.

Our self-guided format is designed for independent travelers. You set the pace, choose your daily distances, and walk without a guide or group. Before departure, everything is arranged for you, so each evening you arrive knowing your accommodation is confirmed, your luggage is waiting, and support is available if needed.

Solo walkers often tell us that a trail journey is one of the most rewarding ways to travel alone. The route itself creates a natural community of fellow pilgrims, and the sense of personal achievement at the end of each stage is something a group tour cannot replicate.

The credential is the official pilgrim document. You collect stamps along the way in churches, hostels, bars, and pilgrim offices.

  • Camino de Santiago: presenting a credential stamped over the last 100 km (starting from Sarria) entitles you to receive the Compostela, the certificate issued in Santiago de Compostela.

  • Via Francigena: you collect stamps along the route and receive the Testimonium on arrival in Rome.

SloWays sells official credentials and guidebooks through the Via Francigena shop. You can add one to your booking or purchase it separately.

On almost all SloWays routes, luggage transfer is included in the package. Every morning, you leave your main bag at the accommodation and a trusted local partner transports it to the next stop, so you walk with just a light daypack.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Maximum weight: usually 15-20 kg per person. Check your trip details for the exact limit.

  • Collection time: your luggage must be ready by a set time each morning, usually between 8:00 and 9:00 AM.

  • Exceptions: the service is not available on some mountain stages or backpacking-style itineraries. The trip page clearly states when luggage transfer is excluded.

Yes. All SloWays trips include access to the SloWays app, developed in collaboration with Itineraria. The app includes:

  • Offline GPS navigation for your route, with no data connection needed on the trail

  • Turn-by-turn directions and waypoint alerts

  • Your full itinerary and daily stage information

  • Emergency contacts and support access

The app is available on iOS and Android, has been downloaded more than 30,000 times, and works on the Via Francigena, Camino de Santiago, Via di Francesco, and all other routes in the SloWays catalog.

Yes. SloWays offers flexible self-guided departures on most routes, so you can choose your own start date without joining a fixed group.

A custom trip design service is also available for travelers who want to adjust stage lengths, add rest days, upgrade accommodation, or combine sections from different routes.

If you have specific needs related to fitness level, a tight schedule, accessibility, dietary requirements, or spiritual requests, tell us at the time of booking and we will build a tailored itinerary for you.

This is one of the questions we are asked most often. The short answer: they are different experiences, and one is not better than the other.

Camino de Santiago

  • Atmosphere: international, festive, busy

  • Landscape: Meseta, Galicia, Pyrenees

  • Final destination: Santiago de Compostela

  • Certificate: Compostela

  • Crowd level: high (especially Camino Francés)

Italian Trails (Via Francigena)

  • Atmosphere: intimate, quiet, more local

  • Landscape: Tuscany, Umbria, Alps, Sicily

  • Final destination: Rome

  • Certificate: Testimonium

  • Crowd level: low to moderate

Travelers looking for the international pilgrim community and the emotion of arriving in Santiago usually choose the Camino Francés. Those who want to walk through a more authentic side of Italy, with fewer crowds and remarkable scenery, often find something unique in the Italian trails.

Many of our guests end up doing both.
