Spend seven days immersed in the quiet, soul-soothing beauty of Umbria along the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti — a roughly 90-kilometre loop around the Monti Amerini that leads you through forested trails, silent chestnut woods, and perfectly preserved medieval villages.

Starting and ending in the tiny hamlet of Tenaglie, you’ll walk at your own pace across gentle hills, pausing in ancient stone settlements where time seems to have slowed of its own accord. Yellow way-markings guide you up to the 1,000-metre ridge of Monte Croce di Serra, before bringing you back down through olive groves, vineyards, and the shimmering surface of Lake Corbara.

With comfortable local stays, delicious regional cuisine, and stretches of silence that feel like a rare luxury, this is a peaceful journey to reconnect with nature, heritage, and yourself.

The Cammino dei Borghi Silenti is more than a hiking trail — it’s a slow-travel experience grounded in quiet landscapes, deep-rooted traditions, and meaningful encounters with small communities. Its sustainability lies in its low-impact spirit (walking or biking), in the support it brings to lesser-known villages, and in the focus on local hospitality and nature-based experiences.

Highlights

  • Explore the hilltop gem of Orvieto, a breathtaking town of Etruscan roots and Gothic splendour, perched dramatically on its tufa cliff.
  • Walk through spectacular Umbrian landscapes, where rolling hills, forests and quiet countryside unfold in a palette of soft colours and timeless beauty.
  • Discover ancient villages and historic sanctuaries, small stone hamlets where silence lingers and centuries of tradition are still alive in daily life.
  • Stay in cosy, family-run accommodations, enjoying warm hospitality and delicious regional dishes crafted from local ingredients.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Orvieto

Arrival in Orvieto

Orvieto is one of Umbria’s most striking hill towns, dramatically perched on a tufa cliff overlooking the Paglia Valley. Founded by the Etruscans, it still protects traces of ancient tombs and a fascinating network of underground tunnels carved deep into the volcanic rock.

Its beating heart is the Duomo di Orvieto, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture shimmering with mosaics and decorated with extraordinarily detailed sculptures.

Wandering through its cobbled lanes, you’ll come across artisan workshops, wine cellars serving the famous Orvieto Classico, and panoramic terraces that open onto the soft curves of the Umbrian countryside.

Day 2

Transfer to Tenaglie and walk to Melezzole, 22 km

Transfer to Tenaglie and walk to Melezzole, 22 km

A private morning transfer brings you from Orvieto to the tiny hamlet of Tenaglie, a peaceful cluster of stone houses surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. This is where your journey begins — in the quiet rhythm of rural Umbria.

Leaving the village behind, the trail rises gently into wooded hills scented with oak and chestnut. As you walk, scattered farmhouses appear between the trees, and wide openings offer beautiful views across the Tiber Valley. The landscape feels intimate yet expansive, a perfect introduction to the pace of the Cammino.

By afternoon, you reach Melezzole, a beautifully preserved medieval village resting on a ridge. Its narrow alleys, stone archways, and the comforting aroma of Umbrian cooking create the feeling of stepping back in time. This peaceful hilltop settlement will be your home for the night — a serene first stop on your journey.

Day 3

From Melezzole to Morre, 16 km

From Melezzole to Morre, 16 km

Today’s walk is one of the most scenic of the entire journey. The trail climbs slowly toward Monte Croce di Serra, the route’s highest point at nearly 1,000 metres. From the top, the view opens wide over rolling green hills, with the distant outline of Orvieto’s cathedral appearing like a quiet landmark on the horizon.

A soft descent carries you through meadows dotted with wildflowers and the cool shade of pine woods before the path leads into Morre — a small, welcoming borgo of stone houses and sweeping terraces. It’s the perfect place to end the day, perhaps with a glass of Orvieto Classico as the light fades over the valley.

Distance: 16 km

Elevation Gain: +720/-780 m

Day 4

From Morre to Civitella del Lago, 16 km

From Morre to Civitella del Lago, 16 km

Leaving Morre, you slip into the quiet heart of Umbria. The path winds through oak woods and gentle ridges until Acqualoreto appears — a tiny stone borgo perched above the Tiber Valley, perfect for a mid-morning pause in the shade of its little square.

From here, ancient footpaths bordered by dry-stone walls and holm oaks guide you toward the archaeological site of Scoppieto, where Roman potters once shaped amphorae destined to travel down the Tiber.

A descent brings you to Baschi, its medieval centre overlooking the countryside. After wandering its narrow alleys — or enjoying a plate of handmade pasta drizzled with local olive oil — the trail climbs again toward Civitella del Lago. Set high above Lake Corbara, the village greets you with sweeping views of the water and the distant Apennines: a breathtaking panorama to close the day.

Elevation Gain: +660/-740 m

Day 5

From Civitella del Lago to Baschi, 12 km

From Civitella del Lago to Baschi, 12 km

This stage is shorter, but rich in variety and gentle beauty. Leaving Civitella, the path descends through olive terraces and vineyards suspended above the still waters of Lake Corbara. Small farms and cypress-lined tracks invite an easy, unhurried pace as you make your way down the valley.

As Baschi comes back into view on its rocky spur, the soft Umbrian light frames the medieval village perfectly. Known for its traditional cuisine, this is the place to try umbrichelli al tartufo or a hearty wild boar stew, best enjoyed with a glass of local Orvieto wine.

Spend the evening wandering its historic lanes, watching life unfold in the piazza as the sun sets — a simple, timeless scene that feels like the essence of slow travel.

Day 6

From Baschi to Tenaglie, 15 km

From Baschi to Tenaglie, 15 km

Your final stretch brings the pilgrimage full circle. From Baschi, follow quiet country lanes through olive groves, vineyards, and open hills dotted with farmhouses. The trail climbs gently toward Montecchio, a village famous for its medieval tower and exceptional olive oil — a perfect place to rest and taste bruschetta drizzled with freshly pressed oil.
From Montecchio, the path winds peacefully through chestnut and oak woods, passing shrines and old stone walls, until you return to Tenaglie, where the Cammino began. The silence that gives this route its name seems to deepen here, as you complete your journey surrounded by the timeless landscape of Umbria.

Details

Is this for me?

The route is considered moderate, with gentle elevation changes and steady paths that unfold mostly along unsurfaced country roads and woodland tracks. While some stages are longer, the terrain is rarely technical, and several sections offer well-designed shortcuts or alternative routes if you prefer to shorten the day or simply walk at a more relaxed pace.

Throughout the journey, navigation is reassuringly simple: the entire itinerary is clearly marked with the official signs of the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti, guiding you from village to village with yellow arrows and consistent waymarking. It’s a route designed for walkers who love quiet landscapes, steady rhythms, and the pleasure of following a trail that feels both intuitive and well cared for.

We place great importance on the choice of accommodations and select hotels with care and attention. We understand how essential it is to rest well after a day of walking. We always prefer cozy and characteristic establishments, preferably family-run, that fully embody the spirit of the place and offer hospitality with courtesy and comfort.

Where, due to the nature of the route, accommodation options are limited, we choose the one that best aligns with our standards.

When to travel

You can walk the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti any day from March 1st to October 31st, a long season that allows you to choose the atmosphere that suits you best.

Spring (March–May) is one of the most beautiful times to be on the trail: the woods smell of new leaves, the meadows are dotted with wildflowers, and the temperatures are perfect for long days of walking. Villages begin to wake from winter, and the landscape feels fresh and full of promise.

Summer (June–August) brings long, sunlit evenings and vibrant countryside colours. Mornings are wonderfully quiet and cool in the hills, and you’ll often find shaded stretches through oak and chestnut woods. It’s an ideal season if you love warm weather, relaxed village life and lingering al fresco dinners.

Autumn (September–October) is perhaps the most atmospheric moment of all — a season of soft golden light, harvest scents, and peaceful trails. The hills turn shades of amber and rust, the heat softens, and the villages come alive with local festivals. It’s a perfect time if you enjoy mild temperatures and rich seasonal food.

Whenever you choose to go, the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti rewards you with silence, beauty and a gentle rhythm — a journey shaped by nature rather than by the clock.

What to bring

Clothing and other items
You will need your regular walking/cycling gear, including some sort of reflective garment. For the evenings, smart outdoor style trousers (or shorts) are invaluable, as are quick-dry t-shirts. These can be washed easily and will dry overnight and still look good for sightseeing or having a drink in town.

Take as little as possible to avoid potentially lugging a heavy suitcase up three flights of stairs at the end of the day. Please be aware that laundromats (“Laverie”) are not common in rural areas, so plan to do handwashing of small items.

Lightweight walking shoes/ trainers
For wearing around towns & villages. They can also be a back-up pair.

Socks & underwear
Take only good quality socks with quick-dry and insulating qualities. Road test them before you go on the trip. Take a suitable quantity of underwear as washing facilities are limited.

Warm jacket, hat, gloves
Bring a fleece, Polartec or warm layers for the evenings especially in spring or autumn; be sure it is totally suitable for your needs.
A fleece jacket which blocks the wind (Wind-stopper) is the most preferable. In the summer months a lightweight jacket is suitable for evenings.
If you are cycling/walking in mountainous or coastal areas, even in the height of summer, the weather can change very quickly and unexpectedly and you should be prepared for fog, mist, rain, snow or hail at any time. Always take an extra layer with you, as well as a warm hat and gloves.

Waterproof jacket & trousers
If you are caught in heavy rain, with good waterproof clothing you should remain dry. Remember that most garments will lose their properties over time. Few will remain waterproof for more than five years and many deteriorate in three years or less. We recommend a rain jacket with a good hood and collar and waterproof or thermal walking/cycling trousers or tights.

Dress code
In general, you should wear suitable clothing when entering a church (in many places, it is considered unacceptable to go inside wearing shorts or a tank-top). We suggest that women carry a shawl to cover up bear shoulders or low-cut tops. It also comes in handy when your shoulders get sunburned!

It is considered inappropriate for men to go without a shirt / T-shirt (other than at the beach).

Trekking poles (adjustable)
Highly recommended. A pair works best, depending on what you are comfortable with. If you suffer from back or knee pain this should be considered essential. Remember to practise walking with your pole(s) on different types of terrain in the months preceding your trip.

Walking boots
The importance of good footwear cannot be stressed enough. Your boots should be sturdy and of good enough quality to handle all types of terrain. Lightweight boots, (cordura/leather boots) which have Gore-Tex or sympatex water-proofing are most suitable for this trip. They should provide good ankle protection and be well broken in. Waxing leather boots regularly prolongs their life.

Walking tops & trousers
We recommend walking trousers and shorts and quick-dry wicking t-shirts. These can be washed easily and will dry overnight and still look good for sightseeing or having a drink in town. Wicking T-shirts are fast drying, keep moisture away from your skin and are available at outdoor stores. You should also bring one pair of loose-fitting trousers to wear in cities and for evenings out, etc. Shorts or zip-off trousers are useful in warmer weather.
