He is best known for writing the Rule of Saint Benedict, a guide to community life based on prayer, balance, work, and spiritual discipline. Along the Way of St Benedict, walkers follow the places most closely linked to his life: from Norcia, where he was born, to Subiaco, where he lived as a hermit and founded his first monasteries, and on to Montecassino, where he wrote his Rule and spent the final years of his life.
