Hiking in Cape Verde: Walking Holidays Across Islands, Volcanoes and Valleys

Our Cape Verde walking holidays take you across volcanic islands, lush valleys and dramatic Atlantic coastlines, with unforgettable hiking on Santo Antão and the option to extend your journey to Fogo.

Some islands seem to belong to the same archipelago only when you look at them on a map. Cape Verde is one of those destinations where changing islands can mean changing landscapes completely: volcanic mountains plunging towards the Atlantic, tropical valleys planted with coffee and sugar cane, arid highlands, black beaches, fishing villages and colourful towns where music is woven into everyday life.

A walking holiday in Cape Verde is a chance to experience these contrasts slowly, following well-trodden trails through the mountains of Santo Antão, walking alongside ancient irrigation channels and cultivated terraces, and reaching villages suspended between volcanic cliffs and the ocean.

The journey begins on São Vicente and in Mindelo, the cultural heart of the archipelago, before crossing to Santo Antão, Cape Verde's great hiking island. Those who want to explore further can continue to Fogo, where you can sleep inside an enormous volcanic caldera and climb to the 2,800-metre summit of Pico do Fogo, the highest point in Cape Verde.

This is an archipelago to travel through rather than simply visit, one island at a time and, whenever possible, on foot.

Highlights

  • Santo Antão, home to some of the best hiking in Cape Verde, with volcanic valleys, mountain trails and dramatic Atlantic coastline.
  • Paul Valley, a remarkably green landscape filled with bananas, coffee plants, guava, sugar cane and vegetables.
  • Ribeira das Patas and Ribeira da Torre, where trails and ancient irrigation channels lead through the island's agricultural heartland.
  • Fontainhas, a colourful mountain village perched high above the Atlantic.
  • Ponta do Sol, Santo Antão's former main port and the gateway to some of the island's most beautiful coastal trails.
  • Mindelo, a city of music, markets and colonial architecture, widely considered the cultural capital of Cape Verde.
  • Pico do Fogo, on our extended itinerary: a 2,800-metre volcano surrounded by lava fields, vineyards and settlements within the caldera.
  • The extraordinary diversity between the islands, from almost desert-like landscapes to tropical valleys and from port cities to tiny agricultural villages.

Our Cape Verde trips are graded moderate. A reasonable level of fitness and some walking experience are recommended, although several days offer two hiking options of different lengths and difficulty. Trails are generally not waymarked but are well trodden and used locally.

No. The Pico do Fogo ascent is available for travellers who want to undertake it, but our extended itinerary also includes a non-hiking alternative focused on the villages, agriculture and landscapes of Fogo.

Cape Verde can be visited throughout the year thanks to its generally warm, dry climate. Temperatures and conditions vary between islands and with altitude, however, so the ideal period also depends on your itinerary and the type of walking you want to do.

The Santo Antão walks can be completed independently using the detailed documentation and SloWays App provided, while some parts of the itinerary involve local drivers or guides as specified in the programme. Certain activities, including the Pico do Fogo ascent, are undertaken with a local guide.
