Our Hiking Tours in Piedmont

In the iconic vineyards of a Foodie and Wine Mecca

This fascinating region bears an indisputable French influence mixed with Italian charm: every hilltop village is blessed with its own wines, every winery offers a cornucopia of delicious alternatives, all passionately cultivated in this heaven for wine lovers.

The food is just top-notch: this area is well known for white truffle, hazelnut, chocolate and fresh pasta.  But there is much more to be discovered after a self-guided walking holiday in Piedmont: for example Turin, the noblest of Italian cities, with its art-nouveau cafes, majestic piazzas and royal palaces.

This self-guided walking holiday follows the ‘Bar to Bar’ route, from Barolo to Barbaresco, a path connecting two of the most renowned wine regions through enchanting landscapes, welcoming villages, and endless labels to taste. Our time in Piedmont starts in Alba, the city of truffles, and continues through hilltop villages, ancient taverns, farmhouses, and vineyards, passing through the delightful villages of Barolo and Barbaresco and the wines that have made their names famous worldwide.

Just an hour from Milan, the Biellese area is a wonderful territory waiting to be discovered. This self-guided walking holiday leads to the Sanctuary of Oropa, one of the largest Marian sanctuaries in Europe, through a pilgrimage that encompasses forests, monasteries, gardens, and nature reserves, all in the presence of the longest morainic hill amphitheater in Europe. It's an ideal route even for those on their first journey, perfect for embracing and overcoming a first small challenge.

Beautiful Val Maira

Between France and Piedmont
piedmont view of val maira mountain with hikers

An enchanting and lesser-known destination for mountain lovers eager to explore a magical land: Val Maira, nestled between France and Piedmont, is heavily influenced by nearby France - an influence proved by the strong Occitan linguistic, cultural, and architectural heritage. It's a stunningly beautiful part of Piedmont, vastly different from Langhe and Barolo, but equally captivating.

Food and Wine

A great place to eat and drink
piedmont food and wine chocolate

Piedmont is one of the best regions in Italy for food and wine: to list only a few among its regional specialties, the region is famous for truffles and wine, meat and "Gianduia" chocolate, made with the local hazelnuts. The wine is simply among the best our blessed country has to offer - from Barbaresco to Barolo, to "Metodo Classico," the Italian champagne produced in the high-roofed cellars known as "underground cathedrals".

That is why we have featured the region in two of our blog posts about best food and wine trips!

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Walk

Is Piedmont difficult to explore?

Piedmont is a wonderful destination for walkers, offering routes suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.

You can explore vineyard-covered hills, forests, and Alpine landscapes through itineraries of varying difficulty.

Val Maira is ideal for those looking for more demanding mountain hikes, while Oropa is often the route we recommend to first-time walkers thanks to its shorter stages and accessible terrain.

Piedmont is an appealing destination throughout the year.

For our walking holidays in Piedmont, we generally recommend spring and autumn, when the landscapes are at their most colourful and visitor numbers are lower.

These seasons are especially rewarding in the Barolo wine region, where vineyards and rolling hills create some of the area's most iconic scenery.

Piedmont offers an impressive variety of landscapes.

From the vineyards of the Langhe and Barolo regions to the peaks of Val Maira, from the Sanctuary of Oropa to the views over Lake Viverone along the Via Francigena, every route reveals a different side of the region.

If you need advice, our team is here to help you choose the itinerary that suits you best.

If you've found a Piedmont walking holiday that matches what you're looking for, there are two ways to book.

  1. Send us an email at info@sloways.eu or call us on (+39) 0552340736. We'll ask for a few details about your trip, including your preferred travel dates, the number of travellers, and any special requests.

  2. Use our online calculator, available on every tour page, to receive a provisional price. If you're happy with the estimate, send us a request and we'll proceed with checking availability and confirming the booking.

We provide accommodation in B&Bs, farmhouses, and 3-star hotels, all with private bedrooms and private bathrooms.

These properties combine comfort with authenticity, helping you enjoy a genuine walking holiday experience in Piedmont.

All our Piedmont holidays are self-guided.

There are no organised groups or accompanying guides. Instead, you walk independently using the detailed route documentation prepared by our travel specialists.

We take care of all the logistics, including accommodation bookings and luggage transfers, allowing you to enjoy the journey at your own pace.

Piedmont is well connected from across Europe.

Turin Caselle Airport is the region's main gateway, with direct flights from many European cities. Milan Malpensa Airport, around 90 minutes away, is often a convenient alternative for international travellers.

By train, Alba, the starting point for our Barolo and Barbaresco routes, can be reached from Turin in around 90 minutes. Biella, the gateway to the Cammino di Oropa, is directly connected to Turin, while Cuneo is the most convenient access point for Val Maira.

Your travel documentation includes detailed arrival instructions and local transport information tailored to your itinerary.

In most of our Piedmont walking holidays, luggage transfer from one accommodation to the next is included in the price.

Each morning you set off with a light daypack while your main luggage is transferred to your next accommodation.

Some mountain routes, particularly in Val Maira, include sections that are not accessible by vehicles. In these cases, we clearly explain what to expect before you book.

Every tour page includes a detailed list of what is and is not included in the package.

The best route depends on the type of experience you're looking for.

  • Cammino di Oropa is often our first recommendation for people trying a multi-day walking holiday for the first time. Stages are relatively short, the terrain is accessible, and the pilgrimage atmosphere adds meaning to the journey.

  • Barolo and Barbaresco (Langhe) is ideal if you're passionate about food, wine, and vineyard landscapes. Expect gentle walking, historic villages, excellent cuisine, and charming countryside accommodation.

  • Val Maira is suited to walkers looking for a more remote mountain experience, with Alpine scenery, Occitan culture, and very few crowds. A good level of fitness is recommended.

  • Val Chisone and Val Germanasca offers a mountain experience comparable to Val Maira, combined with a fascinating Waldensian heritage and lesser-known landscapes.

If you're unsure which route is right for you, our team will be happy to help you choose based on your experience, fitness level, and travel dates.
