Our Puglia Hiking Tours

Puglia and Matera: Sea and Sassi

Warm and inviting sun, hilltop towns painted in white, labyrinths of alleys between whitewashed houses and, of course, the sea – blue and endless. You’ll walk along ancient shepherds’ trails or through vast fields of centuries-old olive trees framed by dry stone walls. Walking in Puglia and Salento truly feels like living the most iconic Italian experience.

But none of this would be the same without the greatest treasure of this generous region: its people. Warm, welcoming, and deeply connected to their land, the Apulians invite you to slow down and rediscover the joy of each step. At SloWays, we offer self-guided Puglia walking holidays designed to immerse you in authentic landscapes, local traditions, and the true spirit of Southern Italy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Walk

Is Puglia difficult to walk?

Puglia is mostly flat, which makes it one of the most accessible walking destinations in Italy.

That said, some sections, particularly along the Salento Coastal Path, require good stability due to unpaved and uneven terrain.

In the weeks before your trip, it's worth building your endurance with a few walks closer to home.

April to mid-June and September to October are the sweet spots: pleasant temperatures, vibrant landscapes, and fewer crowds.

July and August are hot and busy, especially on the coast.

November is a good option for those who enjoy quieter trails and mild winter sunshine.

It depends on the itinerary you choose.

  • The Salento Coastal Path follows the shoreline from Otranto to Lecce, with sea views, fishing villages, and the dramatic Punta Palascia lighthouse – the easternmost point of Italy.

  • The Way to Matera crosses inland Puglia: olive groves, dry stone walls, small hilltop towns, and wildflower-covered paths leading to Matera and its extraordinary Sassi – cave dwellings carved into the rock that have no equal anywhere in Italy.
