PIETERPAD

A Journey Through the Soul of the Netherlands

A 500-kilometre journey across the entire length of the Netherlands, from the Wadden Sea in the north to the hills of Limburg in the south. The Pieterpad is not just the most iconic Dutch trail—it is a slow journey through the heart of a country shaped by water, wind, and time.

It begins in Pieterburen, a quiet village near the coast, and ends on the Sint-Pietersberg hill near Maastricht. Along the way, you’ll cross forests, rivers, heathlands, farmland, and charming historical towns, walking through landscapes that shift subtly with every step.

The Pieterpad takes you deep into the Netherlands' rural beauty, away from big cities and into the everyday rhythm of villages, countryside, and wild natural areas. Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Walk

How long is the Pieterpad?

The Pieterpad is approximately 500 km long, running from Pieterburen in the north to Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht.

Our self-guided tour is designed to be completed in stages, making it accessible and flexible.

You can walk it one section at a time or enjoy a longer continuous journey – it's up to you.

No.

Each stage is a self-contained section of the route and can be walked independently, in any order, and in separate trips.

Many walkers complete the Pieterpad over several years, one stage at a time.

If you want to walk the full 500 km end to end, that is possible too: just let us know and we will help you plan the sequence.

Yes.

The Pieterpad is one of the most accessible long-distance trails in Europe.

The terrain is almost entirely flat, with no significant elevation gain until the final stage near Limburg.

Daily distances are manageable, typically between 15 and 25 km, and the route is divided into four stages that can be walked independently.

If you have never done a multi-day walking holiday before, this is an excellent place to start.

The Pieterpad takes you through the true diversity of the Dutch landscape:

  • Polders and dikes near the northern coast

  • Forests, farmlands, heathlands, and meandering rivers in the central provinces

  • Hills, vineyards, and old mining villages in the south near Limburg

It's a gentle and ever-changing route that reveals the Netherlands far from the tourist crowds.

The ideal seasons are spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October), when the weather is mild, the landscapes are vibrant, and trails are less crowded.

The trail is walkable year-round, and each season has its own character.

Our self-guided walking tour includes:

  • Pre-booked accommodations in charming B&Bs and hotels, always with private rooms and bathrooms

  • Daily luggage transfer, so you can walk comfortably with just a small backpack

  • Detailed route notes, maps, and a digital information pack

  • A personalized mobile app with GPS navigation and offline maps

  • 24/7 support in case you need assistance during your walk

We select small, locally-owned hotels, guesthouses, and bed & breakfasts that reflect the spirit of the region.

All offer comfortable private rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and a warm, authentic welcome – perfect for relaxing after a day on the trail.

The trail begins in Pieterburen, a small village in the province of Groningen.

The easiest way to get there is by train to Groningen, followed by a local bus to Pieterburen.

If you are joining a specific stage rather than starting from the beginning, each stage starts and ends in a town with good rail connections, making it easy to arrive by public transport from Amsterdam, Eindhoven, or other major Dutch cities.

Absolutely.

The Pieterpad is one of the best long-distance trails for solo walkers.

The route passes through villages and small towns regularly, accommodation is pre-booked at every stage, and our team is reachable throughout your journey.

The flat terrain and excellent waymarking make it straightforward to navigate alone, even if you have never walked a long-distance trail before.

Yes.

The route is very well signposted, using the standard red-and-white markers of the Dutch long-distance trail network (LAW).

We also provide detailed GPS navigation through our app, so you can walk with confidence even in less familiar stretches.

The Pieterpad does not require specialist mountain gear.

Since SloWays transfers your main luggage between accommodations each day, you only carry a light daypack on the trail.

The essentials:

  • Comfortable, well-worn walking shoes or trail runners (the terrain is mostly flat paths, tracks, and country lanes, not technical mountain terrain)

  • Waterproof jacket (Dutch weather can change quickly)

  • Light layers for morning and evening

  • Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses for open polder sections

  • Water bottle and a small snack for between villages

  • Trekking poles (optional, but useful for longer days)

A detailed packing list is included in your trip documentation.

Our team is available 7 days a week throughout your journey.

Whether it's a practical question or an unexpected situation, you can reach us by phone or via the app, where you'll also find emergency contacts and all your trip information.
