From the golden stones of León’s cathedral to the misty forests of Galicia — the Camino de Santiago León to Sarria is a journey through history, landscapes and layers of time.
You walk day after day: across Castilian plains, along Roman roads, up into the hills of El Bierzo, over the mountain pass into Galicia, and finally into the wooded valleys that lead to Sarria.

Each step reveals a new world: small villages shaped by centuries of pilgrims, vineyards and chestnut forests, ancient bridges and the soft silence of early-morning mist.
It’s a Camino with rhythm and space — enough to breathe, enough to wander, enough to listen to the land.

If you’re looking for a full-bodied Camino experience — with variety, history, beauty and authenticity — this path is for you.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in León

Arrival in León

Your journey begins in León, a city shaped by Roman walls, medieval pilgrims and Gothic light. Take time to wander before the walk starts: explore the quiet cloisters of San Marcos, watch the stained-glass windows of the cathedral glow as the sun moves, or simply settle into a small bar for your first tapas and a glass of local wine. Tonight, rest well — the Camino awaits.

Day 2

Walk from León to Villadangos del Páramo, 22 km

Walk from León to Villadangos del Páramo, 22 km

Leaving León, you follow a gentle route out of the city and into the wide, open plains of Castile. The path alternates between quiet country lanes and sections of the historic Camino Francés, still marked by centuries of footprints.
The landscape stretches far, soft and golden, with small villages offering places to pause for a coffee or a simple pilgrim lunch.
As you approach Villadangos del Páramo, the plains feel peaceful and steady — a perfect introduction to the rhythm of the Camino.

Distance: 22 km

Day 3

Walk from Villadangos del Páramo to Astorga, 27 km

Walk from Villadangos del Páramo to Astorga, 27 km

Today the scenery begins to shift. The path leads through farmlands, old Roman routes and small hamlets that seem untouched by time.
Approaching Astorga, the land rises softly and the silhouette of the episcopal palace appears — Gaudí’s unexpected jewel in the heart of León province.
Astorga welcomes you with charming squares, chocolate shops and the warm character of its old quarter. It’s a beautiful and historic stop, perfect for a relaxed evening.

Distance: 27 km

Day 4

Walk from Astorga to Rabanal del Camino, 21 km

Walk from Astorga to Rabanal del Camino, 21 km

Leaving Astorga, you enter the region of La Maragatería, known for its stone villages and deep rural traditions.
The path climbs gently throughout the day, offering long views across the plains behind you and the first hints of mountains ahead.
The final stretch to Rabanal del Camino feels especially atmospheric: the air grows fresher, the landscape greener, and the village greets pilgrims with a calm, almost monastic quiet.
Here, stone houses and narrow lanes set the tone for the mountain days to come.

Distance: 21 km

Day 5

Walk from Rabanal del Camino to Ponferrada, 32 km

Walk from Rabanal del Camino to Ponferrada, 32 km

One of the most memorable stages of the route. The day begins with a steady climb toward Cruz de Ferro, one of the Camino’s most symbolic places.
From the iron cross, the path descends through heather-covered slopes and remote mountain hamlets, before entering the region of El Bierzo — a land of vineyards, chestnut forests and gentle hills.
Ponferrada awaits at the end of a long but rewarding day: its Templar castle, lively old town and welcoming cafés make it the perfect place to rest.

Day 6

Walk from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo, 21 km

Walk from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo, 21 km

Today’s walk is softer, weaving through vineyards, orchards and quiet rural villages. The landscape is warmer, greener, and infused with the character of El Bierzo.
Small bridges cross gentle streams, and the trail moves between shaded paths and easy roads.
Villafranca del Bierzo appears like a peaceful retreat: cobbled streets, historic churches, and the famous “Door of Forgiveness,” where medieval pilgrims unable to continue received blessings.
It’s a place made for slow evenings.

Distance: 21 km

Day 7

Walk from Villafranca del Bierzo to Cebreiro, 29 km

Walk from Villafranca del Bierzo to Cebreiro, 29 km

A beautiful and demanding day. The route follows the valley before beginning the long ascent to O Cebreiro, the gateway to Galicia.
As you climb, the scenery grows wilder: forests thicken, views open across deep valleys, and the air cools.
Reaching O Cebreiro feels like stepping into another world — a stone village perched on the ridge, known for its ancient pallozas (traditional dwellings) and sweeping mountain views.
A truly unforgettable stop on the Camino.

Distance: 29 km

Day 8

Walk from Cebreiro to Triacastela, 21 km

Walk from Cebreiro to Triacastela, 21 km

The day begins along a breathtaking mountain ridge, where Galicia unfolds in misty greens and rolling hills.
The descent leads through small hamlets, chestnut woods and grassy pastures, with quiet corners perfect for resting or taking in the scenery.
Triacastela sits in a sheltered valley, its name recalling the three medieval castles that once guarded this area. It’s a gentle, peaceful end to a scenic day.

Distance: 21 km

Day 9

Walk from Triacastela to Sarria, 21 km

Walk from Triacastela to Sarria, 21 km

A choice of two routes leads out of Triacastela — through the monastery of Samos or along a more rural forested path.
Both offer a calm and reflective walk toward Sarria, passing villages, stone chapels and soft Galician landscapes.
Sarria marks the beginning of the final 100 km for many pilgrims, so the town feels lively, full of stories and anticipation.
For you, it’s the closing chapter of a longer journey — a moment to rest, reflect and celebrate.

Distance: 21 km

Day 10

Arrivederci, Sarria!

Arrivederci, Sarria!

Your walking ends here, but the Camino tends to stay with you — in the pace you found, the landscapes you crossed, and the quiet satisfaction of having walked across an entire region of Spain.

When to travel

The best time to walk from León to Sarria is from April to October, when the weather is mild and the trail is at its most welcoming.
Spring brings fresh green landscapes and cooler temperatures, perfect for long days on foot. Early summer offers stable weather and bright, open views across the plains and mountains.

Autumn, with its warm colours and crisp air, is one of the most beautiful times to cross El Bierzo and enter Galicia — peaceful villages, quieter trails and soft light on the hills.

July and August are perfectly walkable, but warmer in the plains around León and busier near Sarria; starting early in the morning helps you enjoy cooler hours and quieter paths.

Whatever the season, this is a journey shaped by simplicity, steady walking and the changing landscapes around you — each period giving the route its own mood and beauty.

What to bring

Clothing and other items
You will need your regular walking/cycling gear, including some sort of reflective garment. For the evenings, smart outdoor style trousers (or shorts) are invaluable, as are quick-dry t-shirts. These can be washed easily and will dry overnight and still look good for sightseeing or having a drink in town.

Take as little as possible to avoid potentially lugging a heavy suitcase up three flights of stairs at the end of the day. Please be aware that laundromats (“Laverie”) are not common in rural areas, so plan to do handwashing of small items.

Lightweight walking shoes/ trainers
For wearing around towns & villages. They can also be a back-up pair.

Socks & underwear
Take only good quality socks with quick-dry and insulating qualities. Road test them before you go on the trip. Take a suitable quantity of underwear as washing facilities are limited.

Warm jacket, hat, gloves
Bring a fleece, Polartec or warm layers for the evenings especially in spring or autumn; be sure it is totally suitable for your needs.
A fleece jacket which blocks the wind (Wind-stopper) is the most preferable. In the summer months a lightweight jacket is suitable for evenings.
If you are cycling/walking in mountainous or coastal areas, even in the height of summer, the weather can change very quickly and unexpectedly and you should be prepared for fog, mist, rain, snow or hail at any time. Always take an extra layer with you, as well as a warm hat and gloves.

Waterproof jacket & trousers
If you are caught in heavy rain, with good waterproof clothing you should remain dry. Remember that most garments will lose their properties over time. Few will remain waterproof for more than five years and many deteriorate in three years or less. We recommend a rain jacket with a good hood and collar and waterproof or thermal walking/cycling trousers or tights.

Dress code
In general, you should wear suitable clothing when entering a church (in many places, it is considered unacceptable to go inside wearing shorts or a tank-top). We suggest that women carry a shawl to cover up bear shoulders or low-cut tops. It also comes in handy when your shoulders get sunburned!

It is considered inappropriate for men to go without a shirt / T-shirt (other than at the beach).

Trekking poles (adjustable)
Highly recommended. A pair works best, depending on what you are comfortable with. If you suffer from back or knee pain this should be considered essential. Remember to practise walking with your pole(s) on different types of terrain in the months preceding your trip.

Walking boots
The importance of good footwear cannot be stressed enough. Your boots should be sturdy and of good enough quality to handle all types of terrain. Lightweight boots, (cordura/leather boots) which have Gore-Tex or sympatex water-proofing are most suitable for this trip. They should provide good ankle protection and be well broken in. Waxing leather boots regularly prolongs their life.

Walking tops & trousers
We recommend walking trousers and shorts and quick-dry wicking t-shirts. These can be washed easily and will dry overnight and still look good for sightseeing or having a drink in town. Wicking T-shirts are fast drying, keep moisture away from your skin and are available at outdoor stores. You should also bring one pair of loose-fitting trousers to wear in cities and for evenings out, etc. Shorts or zip-off trousers are useful in warmer weather.
