The (not) Portugese Way

From Tui to Santiago
Vineyard and countryside walk on a Portugal hiking holiday

The Portuguese Way starts in Lisbon and ends in Santiago: currently, we offer the last part of the route, which actually unfolds entirely... in Spain. It begins in Tui, on the border with Portugal, and continues through eucalyptus forests and cathedrals, coastal villages, and others known for their hot springs, all the way to Santiago.

We'll soon add the rest of the journey: in the meantime, you can ask us to extend your trip with a few days in Porto, just an hour's drive from Tui.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Walk

Which months are recommended for walking in Portugal?

Spring and autumn are generally the best seasons for walking holidays in Portugal.

Spring offers pleasant temperatures and landscapes coming into bloom, while autumn is known for its warm colours and comfortable walking conditions.

Summer can be very hot, particularly in inland regions, making walking more demanding.

Portugal offers a remarkable variety of landscapes depending on the route you choose.

The Rota Vicentina is famous for its dramatic Atlantic cliffs and wild coastal scenery.

The Portuguese Way of Santiago crosses forests, farmland, historic villages, and open countryside.

The Azores and Madeira feature volcanic landscapes, lush vegetation, waterfalls, and extraordinary biodiversity.

The difficulty varies depending on the itinerary.

The Rota Vicentina is accessible to many walkers and is often suitable for those with moderate fitness levels.

The Portuguese Way of Santiago ranges from easy to moderately challenging, depending on the section chosen.

The Azores and Madeira generally offer more demanding terrain, making them better suited to experienced hikers looking for a challenge.

If you're unsure which route suits you best, our team is here to help you choose the right itinerary.

In most tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and popular walking destinations, English is widely spoken.

In smaller villages and less-visited rural areas, English may be less common.

Learning a few simple Portuguese phrases can help enrich your experience and interactions with local people.

We select B&Bs, rural guesthouses, farm stays, and 3-star hotels, depending on the itinerary and location.

All accommodations are chosen to provide a balance of comfort, authenticity, and local character.

They offer an excellent base from which to explore Portugal's landscapes while enjoying a welcoming atmosphere at the end of each walking day.

The Portuguese Camino is one of the best introductions to pilgrimage walking for first-time Camino travellers.

The traditional route from Lisbon or Porto to Santiago de Compostela offers well-marked paths, varied scenery, and a manageable level of difficulty for walkers with a reasonable level of fitness.

If you prefer coastal landscapes, the Coastal Route combines the Camino experience with spectacular Atlantic views.

For travellers looking for something different from a pilgrimage route, Madeira offers shorter walking holidays with volcanic scenery, levada paths, and flexible daily distances.

If you're unsure which option suits you best, our team will be happy to help you choose.

These three routes offer very different experiences.

  • Portuguese Camino – a historic pilgrimage route leading to Santiago de Compostela, combining cultural heritage, traditional villages, and the atmosphere of the Camino.

  • Fishermen's Trail (Rota Vicentina) – a spectacular coastal route along Portugal's Atlantic shoreline, known for wild cliffs, remote beaches, and a more secluded walking experience.

  • Madeira walking holidays – island-based itineraries following levada canals, mountain ridges, forests, and volcanic landscapes, ideal for walkers seeking variety without committing to a long-distance trail.

Your choice depends on whether you're looking for a pilgrimage experience, a coastal adventure, or a walking holiday focused on nature and volcanic scenery.

Daily distances vary according to the itinerary selected.

Most of our Portugal self-guided holidays average between 12 and 20 km (7 to 12 miles) per day.

The Portuguese Camino often includes longer walking days, while the Fishermen's Trail and many Madeira itineraries can offer greater flexibility.

Several trips include shorter stage options for walkers who prefer a more relaxed pace.

Our team can help you choose the itinerary that best matches your fitness level and walking experience.

Luggage transfer is included on most of our self-guided walking holidays in Portugal.

This includes many itineraries along the Portuguese Camino and the Fishermen's Trail.

Your luggage is collected each morning and delivered to your next accommodation, allowing you to walk with only a light daypack.

On a small number of more remote itineraries, luggage transfer may not be available. Whenever this is the case, it is clearly stated in the trip description.

If you have any questions about a specific itinerary, our team will be happy to confirm exactly what is included before you book.
