From the harsh Alpine peaks to gentle hills, ending in the tranquil agricultural plain of Piedmont: the first section of the Italian Via Francigena—known here as the Via Francigena from Aosta to Ivrea—is a kaleidoscope of colors and landscapes, a condensed version of the ever-changing way to Rome.
Breathe the cool Alpine air: this is where your journey begins. Depending on the season, you can start from the Great Saint Bernard Pass—where the ancient hostel has welcomed pilgrims for over 1000 years, in a heavenly scenery of staggered peaks and a crystal-clear lake. Or begin in Aosta, proudly showcasing its ancient Roman heritage.
This journey reveals the many souls of Italy: the tranquil rhythm of provincial towns, the lively atmosphere of villages nestled between the Alps, and the modern charm of its industrial cities. You will taste surprising local specialties—from mountain cheeses to rice-based dishes—paired with the elegant wines of the Val d’Aosta.
From here, every day brings something new. Follow ancient routes shaded by woods and streams, walk among vineyards and taste the wines they produce; cross Medieval bridges and Roman roads hidden in the forest, until you reach the soft Piedmont hills and Ivrea, home to an open-air museum of Modern architecture.
Between June and September, it’s also possible to add two additional stages at the start of the trip, beginning in Col Grand St Bernard (on the border with Switzerland):
Col Grand St Bernard – Etroubles (13.5 km)
Etroubles – Aosta (15.5 km)
