Walking Through Five Italy’s Wine Lands

05 Mar 2026

Wine is the lifeblood of many Italian landscapes: a red and golden treasure that contributes to the country’s extraordinary food culture, a symbol of place and tradition, and often the most welcome guest at the table. It is one of Italy’s greatest prides — sought after and appreciated all over the world, and one of the many reasons travellers fall in love with this country.

Visitors come here looking for it, happy to taste labels directly from the producers whose wines they may already enjoy back home, imagining the landscapes where they are born. And once here, it becomes easy to understand why wine is so deeply connected to the territory: every vineyard reflects the land that nurtures it, every bottle tells the story of climate, soil and tradition.

Walking through wine regions offers a particularly beautiful way to experience this connection. Vineyards stretch along gentle hills, historic villages welcome travellers at the end of each stage, and a glass of local wine becomes the perfect way to celebrate a day spent outdoors. Walking is wonderful in itself — but raising a glass in a small cellar or enjoying the wines produced by the vineyards you have just crossed adds a special pleasure to the journey.

Many of our walking tours pass through some of Italy’s most famous wine regions: from the perfectly ordered vineyards of the Langhe to the rolling hills of Chianti, from Umbria to Montefiascone, where legend says a wine was so good it stopped a cardinal in his tracks.

These journeys reveal both famous labels and lesser-known discoveries, following unique aromatic notes while enjoying the landscapes that produce them.

Below are some of our favourite wine-inspired walking tours — routes that cross some of the most iconic wine territories of Italy. These are landscapes with a strong agricultural soul, where wine is celebrated almost like a religion and where local recipes are designed to accompany it perfectly.

And for those who are particularly passionate about wine, many of our trips can be customised with tastings at renowned wineries or special wine-focused experiences along the way.

A journey through the land of Prosecco, one of Italy’s most beloved wines. Visitors from all over the world are enchanted by its fresh, lively character — and it is easy to understand why it is so often chosen to celebrate special moments.

This particular itinerary crosses the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape in the heart of Veneto at the foothills of the Dolomites.

The scenery here is unique: a mosaic of rolling hills, vineyards, forests and ciglioni — traditional grassy vineyard terraces — dotted with historic villages such as Serravalle, Arfanta, Pieve di Soligo and Valdobbiadene.

The route combines natural beauty and cultural heritage: from historic watermills such as the Molinetto della Croda to panoramic ridgelines and valleys covered in vineyards that produce the celebrated Prosecco Superiore DOCG.

Via Francigena: From Siena to Viterbo

This section of the historic Via Francigena pilgrimage route crosses several traditional wine territories.

From Tuscany — including the stunning Val d’Orcia — the path continues south toward Viterbo, gateway to the final stretch of the pilgrimage route to Rome.

And of course, wine plays its part here too.

One of the most famous local stories is connected to the wine Est! Est!! Est!!! of Montefiascone.

Legend tells that Johannes Defuk, a German bishop and passionate wine lover, was travelling along the Via Francigena to Rome. Knowing his fondness for good wine, he asked his servant Martino to travel ahead of him and identify the inns that served the best wine. Whenever Martino found a good one, he would write the word “Est” — meaning “there is” — on the door.

But when he arrived in Montefiascone, he discovered a wine so exceptional that he wrote “Est! Est!! Est!!!” on the door to signal its extraordinary quality.

When Johannes Defuk arrived and tasted the wine, he agreed completely. According to the story, he liked it so much that he stayed in Montefiascone for several days — and the wine became famous under that very name.
