route map

Seize the opporunity to cycle on three islands in one trip! This wonderful bicycle tour begins on the Pomeranian coastline and then reaches the famous islands of Rügen, Hiddensee and Usedom, some of Germany's most beloved natural resorts. Admire their lush landscape, that has inspired artists such as Kaspar Friedrich and Johannes Brahms.

Day 1   Arrival in Stralsund

Individual travel to Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stralsund offers many points of interest, and your trips hasn't even started yet! Stroll around the Alter Markt, where most of the old buildings and mmonuments are located. In the harbour, see the ‘Gorch Fock’, a German three-mast barque originally built as a school ship in 1933. You will spend the night in Stralsund.

Day 2   From Stralsund to Hiddensee / North Rügen (19-42 km)

Start your trip by taking a ferry in the morning, to reach Hiddensee. This island is a very quiet island, where no cars are allowed. This elegant residential area was once home to Nobel Prize winner for Literature, G. Hauptmann. From the Dornbusch lighthouse, you can see North Rügen, Granitz and Stralsund.

In the afternoon you can take the ferry to Rügen. You will overnight on the Wittow peninsula, or in Glowe.

Day 3   North Rügen, centre of Island (Bergen & Surroundings) (35-63 km)

Today you cycle along the narrow strip of land called ‘Schaabe’, to reach the Jasmund peninsula. You are free to choose between several routes leading to Bergen. You can cycle on the "Königsstuhl" promontory and Sassnitz, or cross through resort towns to the middle of the island (a longer route). You can also go from Glowe past Sagard to Bergen (a shorter route).

Day 4   From Bergen to Greifswald (48-53 km)

Cycle through South Rügen to take the Glewitz Ferry. On your way you will encounter Putbus, founded by Prince Wilhelm-Malte who chose Putbus as his town of residence. Its orangery and stables survived the war and are situated in a beautiful park. The town is also famous for the minuscule theatre and the Crown Prince's residence. Through a shady avenue, you reach Greifswald, birth city of Caspar Friedrich, the world-famous 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter. Greifswald also has the Monastery Ruins of Eldena, a university and a harbour. It is an important cultural hub for Western Pommerania.

Day 5   From Greifswald to Usedom Island (50 km)

In the morning, take the train to Anklam, the birthplace of Otto Lilienthal, a pioneer of human aviation known as the German “Glider King”. You can also visit the Lilienthal Museum. A wonderful tour awaits you today, as you cycle over the Peene River to the ‘Karniner Eisenbahnhubbrücke’, a railway lift bridge. You then continue to the small island of Usedom, through quiet paths leading to the Lagoon of Stettin. On your way, you encounter the resort towns of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin.

Day 6   North Usedom (35 km)

The ancient Imperial Baths with their gorgeous architecture await you on the Baltic Sea Coast. You cycle from resort to resort along the steep, wooden coast. The Peenemünde Technical Museum exhibits Von Braun Ferry Rockets, a pioneering design of a shuttle spacecraft (in the early 1950’s!) and much more.

Day 7   From North Usedom to Stralsund (62 km)

Cycle through Wolgast, or Peenemünde, along the bay, through pine forests eventually reaching Greifswald. There you can visit the State Museum and its art gallery. Take the train (departs every hour) to Stralsund, where you can visit the Deutsches Meeresmuseum/Ozeaneum (a very large public aquarium and one of the largest institutions of its kind in Europe), the St. Marys church, and much more. Return your bicycles and spend the night in Stralsund.

Day 8   Auf wiedersehen Stralsund!
